Although VGA is backward compatible with all previous standards, with the creation of 8514/A, IBM has decided to create a new "standard". It is a PS/2 MicroChannel-based card.
8514/A supports 1024 X 768 pixel resolution in 16 colors (or 256 with upgrade). It drives an interlaced display – every other line in the display is refreshed every other scan of the electron gun.
This lets 8514/A utilize ‘slower’ monitors (therefore usually cheaper) but has the disadvantage of a flickering display.
